Our flight instructor refresher seminars have been put together for helicopter pilots, by helicopter pilots!
Whether you are a flight instructor who wants to keep up with the latest developments in the industry, share ideas and learn from fellow industry instructors and examiners, help to achieve standardisation in the way you deliver your briefings, or you simply want to refresh and improve your instructional techniques and knowledge, our instructor seminar is an excellent way to achieve this.
Perhaps you need to enrol on an instructor seminar to meet the requirements of JAR-FCL 2, if you have a lapsed flight instructor rating, or haven’t quite achieved the minimum number of instructional hours during the previous year, or three year validity period. We can help you with both the refresher seminar and we can also arrange the practical flight test with our FIE, Captain Geoff Day.
If you aren’t sure what the requirements are, give us a call on 0116 259 0186 and we can help you understand which elements of training you need to complete.
What to Expect
The seminar is delivered over two days in accordance with CAA Standards Document 22, which is based on the requirements laid down in AMC to JAR-FCL. During the seminar you will participate in and complete at least 12 hours of lessons, discussions, workshops and syndicate study groups covering the following subjects, with a strong emphasis on teaching and learning, and instructional techniques.
• Current and new rules and regulations, with emphasis on JAR-FCL 2 and JAR-OPS requirements
• Teaching and learning, including the role of the instructor
• Instructional techniques and delivery methods
• Human factors for instructors, as well as factors that could affect the ability of your students
• Safety awareness (in flight and on the ground), incident and accident prevention
• Airmanship, CRM and your responsibility as an instructor • Legal aspects and enforcement procedures • Navigational skills including new/current radio nav aids, safety altitude assessment and altimetry • Teaching of instrument flying, including limited panel
• Weather related topics including methods of distribution
At the end of the two days, provided you meet the other requirements of JAR-FCL 2, which, for a current and valid rating, include 50 instructional hours in the three years preceding the expiry date of your rating and 15 hours in the 12 months preceding this date, your instructor rating will be revalidated by our FIE.
Should you not meet these requirements, or you have a lapsed rating, in addition to attending the seminar you will be required to pass the Instructor Proficiency Check with the FIE (this can be booked for a convenient date, subject to availability, seven days a week). If your instructor rating has lapsed by more than five years you will also require the CAA, to endorse the rating, for which a fee will be payable.
Seminar Format
The seminar consists of a number of lessons or lectures delivered by our FIE and team of speakers. Each topic will last for around 40 - 50 minutes and will allow approximately 15 minutes afterwards for questions and answers.
A detailed seminar timetable can be found further on in this information pack, which outlines the course structure. In addition to the formal lessons, there will be a number of opportunities to participate in some interactive workshops and syndicate groups where you will work with fellow flight instructors to prepare a short briefing to deliver to the rest of the group. This is not a test, so don’t worry - there is no pass or fail!

Please ensure that you bring the following items along with you to the instructor seminar. During the initial morning’s registration our staff are required by the CAA to check all of your documentation:
