Helicentre Aviation's intensive two day Radio Telephony Training Course consists of one full day in the classroom with other delegates, which includes theoretical and practical training (with live ATC examples and a training rig), with the second day preparing for and sitting the practical RT test for the issue of the CAA/JAA Flight Radiotelephony Operators Licence (FRTOL).
Both the classroom-based training and the test are conducted by CAA approved RT examiner Geoff Day, in accordance with current CAA regulations. The FRTOL is a stand-alone licence necessary for the operation of airborne radio equipment as the holding of a Private Pilots Licence alone does not confer any privileges in relation to the operation of an aircrafts radio equipment.
Prior to attending the course candidates will be expected to have obtained a copy of, and to have a basic knowledge of, CAP 413, Radio Telephony Manual which can be ordered from Helicentre Aviation or downloaded electronically from the CAA website.
The training covers basic radiotelephony procedures, general phraseology, aerodrome phraseology, and emergency phraseology. Emphasis will be placed on comparing contrasting procedures at “small” airfields with which the candidates will probably be familiar, and “large/international” airports with which the candidates may be less familiar and which they might otherwise find daunting to either talk to or visit.
Helicopter specific radiotelephony procedures will, of course, also be covered. The practical training will simulate “flying” a route and making all the calls necessary for the safe conduct of such a flight. The test will be briefed and carried out on an individual basis on the second day of the course, and the written communications paper for the PPL can also be taken on this day.
The course fee of £375 + VAT includes both the training and practical RT test, as well as one attempt at the written paper. The licence issue fee is not included and is payable directly to the CAA, however if sending the application off along with a PPL(H) application, the FRTOL is issued free by the CAA.
