A career as a professional Helicopter Pilot provides some of the most exciting and varied types of work you could ever imagine. Whatever the chosen route, the view from the office window is hard to beat! The BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice (Helicopter) is unlike other degree programmes in that all training takes place at Helicentre Aviation Academy. The joint initiative with Middlesex University allows you to gain an honours degree whilst undertaking standard CAA approved modular helicopter pilot training and developing reflective practice at the same time.
The degree programme is the only one of its kind within the industry allowing flight training costs to be part-subsidised by a proportion of the tuition fees. Additionally students who are eligible can apply for student finance just like any other recognised university course. Students enrolled on the programme will graduate with a CPL(H) (Commercial Pilot Licence - Helicopter) but also have the option, for an additional cost, to undertake the Flight Instructor Course during the third year of their studies, typically leading to recruitment within the company.
Combined with a number of scholarship opportunities fully funded and awarded by Helicentre Aviation Academy annually (which students studying on the degree programme are eligible to apply for), funding a new career as a Helicopter Pilot has been made much easier, particularly for the successful scholarship candidates. Alleviating some of the financial strain brought about by training costs is a huge step for the industry, which is dealing with an increasing shortage of pilots worldwide.
The programme has three intakes; September, January, and May, and applications should be made as early as possible directly to Helicentre Aviation, or via UCAS using code X90H. Due to the unique nature of the programme and the funding opportunities, places are limited and offers will be made to those who pass pilot selection prior to each application deadline. Further details can be found at the Middlesex University Website. Applicants who have already commenced training towards a PPL(H) or those who hold a pilot's licence already can also apply.
